General safety instructions

Danger

Failure to observe the information associated with this warning symbol can result in serious injury or even death.

Warning

  • Use the device only in its intended manner. Any other use may result in damage to the device or the surroundings of the device.

  • Do not place the unit on or near a heat source (heating, fire, etc.). Protect the device from high temperatures and temperature fluctuations.

  • Do not expose the unit to a heat source or in a high-temperature location, such as in an unattended vehicle in the sun.

  • Do not operate the unit outside the specified temperature range.

  • Place the unit in such a way that it cannot become a hazard if it falls down, falls over, etc. Always make sure that the device is well secured.

  • The device must be kept out of the reach of children.

  • Do not allow foreign objects (coins, metal pins, insects, etc.) or liquids to enter the device.

  • Only use original accessories, otherwise the device or the accessories may be damaged.

Danger

  • Use of the device can be dangerous and must be avoided in the following areas:

    • Where it can interfere with other electronic devices such as hospitals, airports, airplanes, etc.

    • Where there is a risk of explosion, such as petrol stations, oil refineries, etc.

  • Do not use the unit when driving a vehicle (e.g. bicycle, motorcycle or car).

  • Modification or alteration of the device impairs product safety. Attention Danger of injury!

  • Only use CE certificated power supplies.

  • Do not use the device if it has any damages or is open.

  • Headphones can lead to permanent hearing loss from long-term exposure to sound at high volues. Only use the headphones at low volumes.

  • Do not plug anything else than a headphone jack into the 3.5mm connector. Inserting external voltage to the 3.5mm connector will destroy the device and can harm a person touching it.

  • Holding the device in the same position for a long time can lead to health problems. Make sure to change positions while holding the device and make pauses.

Warning

  • Make sure that the use of this device is permitted in the country and in the desired environment.

  • It is the user’s responsibility to comply with country-specific regulations and ordinances.

  • Never carry out repairs yourself.

  • Handle the device carefully. It can be damaged by knocks, blows or falling from a low height.

  • Avoid operation in the immediate vicinity of strong magnetic or electromagnetic fields, transmitting antennas, HF generators or near electronic devices such as mobile phones. This can impair operation.

  • The stored data may be destroyed or deleted by operating errors, device malfunctions or repair measures. Therefore, it is always advisable to make a backup copy to the PC hard disk for important content.

Battery

The device has an internal lithium-ion battery with 3.7V, 2.5Ah. For transport and storage of several BATLOGGERs together, the relevant regulations must be observed.

Charging

Only use power supplies that have a CE certification and provide a minimum of 500mA/5V.

To guarantee optimim charging without any safety issues, use certified chargers that are USB-IF approved and marked with this logo:

Environmental influences

The BATLOGGER M2 is not waterproof and is therefore not intended for unattended outdoor use.

Microphone / ultrasonic sensor

The microphone itself can be damaged by water. It must therefore be protected from dirt, rain and extreme humidity and installed accordingly. A defective microphone can lead to unusable or incorrect data.

Loudspeaker

The loudspeaker is used, among other things, for listening of the live signal transformed into audible range during recording. This can lead to a feedback loop (loud whistling) depending on the surrounding environment and volume. In this case, reduce the volume and keep the device away from sound-reflecting objects such as walls or your own body or use headphones.

Storage medium SD - card

A microSD card (SDHC or SDXC) serves as storage medium. Tests have shown that cards from different manufacturers and storage capacities may have different storage and deletion times. Recommendations for individual manufacturers cannot be made because memory sizes and technology changes can also have an influence.

GPS reception

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) require a direct line of sight between the receiver and the satellites. If an object is within the direct path, accuracy suffers due to reflections and signal attenuation. This is particularly problematic in urban environments, in valleys and on mountain slopes. Even small Objects (tree cover, roof, human body), can lead to reflections and attenuation. For an exact determination of position it is therefore essential to have a clear view of the sky.

Maps

The device is able to show a map with a path to walk. If you use this device to navigate, always use your best judgment and exercise common sense when making navigational decisions (especially off-road). The device is only giving route suggestions and you still need attentiveness and proper preparation for these kind of outdoor activities. Do not follow the route suggestions if they would lead you to a unsafe situation or an illegal course.

Ensure that you have the proper gear to walk transects before using unfamiliar paths and trails. Keep your eyes off the display in unsafe terrain to make sure you don’t fall over obstacles.

Measuring device

  • The BATLOGGER M2 is a very sensitive measuring device and must be treated as such.

  • In order to obtain usable and reproducible results, you should consider some preparatory measures and familiarize yourself with the device.

  • Basic knowledge of bats and ultrasound is required.

Maintenance and care

  • Clean the unit only with a lint-free cloth and do not use any aggressive cleaning agents.

  • Make sure that no water penetrates into the unit.

Note on environmental protection

Electric and electronic devices as well as batteries must not de disposed of with household waste. Consumers are obliged by law to return electrical and electronic devices as well as batteries at the end of their service lives to the public collection points set up for this purpose or point of sale. Details to this are defined by national law of the respective country. This symbol on the product, the instruction manual or the package indicates that a product is subject to these regulations. By recycling, reusing the materials or other forms of utilising old devices/batteries, you are making an important contribution to protecting our environment
